Abstract

This study aimed to examine the portrayal of the modern Muslim woman in the film Maria. The research topic was derived from the genre of oral literature. Drama, as a product of performance, when recorded on camera, edited, and combined with sound, transforms into film. The main objective was to explain her role in society and to investigate how she is represented both positively and negatively, while considering the field of oral literature through film. The study employed a descriptive method and analysed one hundred episodes of the film using purposive sampling. Data were collected from film texts and analysed through textual analysis. The guiding theoretical framework was Islamic Feminism, which is based on three pillars: the holistic family system, gender differences in life responsibilities, and polygamy. The study found that the Muslim woman is portrayed from two perspectives. The positive perspective depicts her as a counsellor, caregiver, liberator, economist, and a person of genuine affection. However, the negative perspective portrays her as promiscuous, superstitious, quarrelsome, and deceptive. The film revealed that the portrayal of women reflects both challenges and opportunities within the modern Muslim society. The study concluded that the woman’s role is often influenced by patriarchy, which undermines her contribution. Nonetheless, women are also depicted as strong characters and agents of change. The recommendations are that society should shift its perception of women and grant them equal opportunities in employment, education, and respect. Furthermore, scriptwriters and filmmakers are encouraged to present more positive images to contribute to social transformation.
